A Homeschool Portfolio

These are copy of papers that I have to sign after the meeting.

This is my cover letter that BOE has to sign after the meeting.

Alhamdulillah, I finished the portfolio meeting for school year 2009-2010 with Board of Education. My oldest son will be dropped for the next year portfolio because he is already taking classes in college. I will still have to do for my youngest son. Insha Allah.

I would like to share my experience about this meeting.
Insha Allah, it will be useful to others.

What is a Home-school Portfolio?

Some states require an annual assessment of homeschooled students.

The annual assessment can be in form of periodic testing or the presentation of a portfolio.

Basically, a homeschool portfolio is a collection of materials that are used to show what your child has learned during the school year.
The Important of Portfolio

Some homeschooling family need a portfolio is because of the law in some state.
Portfolio can help parents to record their children progress and achievements, especially when the children are homeschooling through high school.
It is also important to help to make a transcript in their high school program.

If your state requires you to keep records, then you should:
- pay attention to any filing dates and submit paperwork promptly
- remember to submit only the information required by your state law.
- create a portfolio, which show her/his how much she has learned and her/his progress.
How and What To Present A Homeschool Portfolio

I always create my own way to make this record keeping more informative for others and useful for the future. You can create your own record keeping which is depending on your children activities. My children love reading the books, working on the textbooks, and doing programming on computer. For the meeting, I create a list of reading books, a list of the textbooks for each subject with the explanations, and some sample of their computer works. I also bring some of their Arabic writing, an album of pictures of their activities and the field trips, and the audio of their reading Al Qur'an.

Then I print and collect all the important documents in a binder.

You can choose any variety of materials to reflect what your child has learned, experienced and accomplished throughout the year.
Some suggestion materials are:
- a journal which contains notes about your child,
- a report card or a progress of your child for all the subjects,
- a list of textbooks or workbooks pages,
- a list of computer software or websites,
- a list of outside classes or online classes,
- a list of activities and achievements of your child,
- samples of the child's work, such as :
  - samples of creative writing,
  - samples of drawings,
  - and sample worksheets of each subjects.
- audio or video tapes of your child,
- pictures of your children activities,
- photos of field trips, artwork, projects and family life,
- brochures and booklets from field trips and other activities,
- a list of books that the child has read including both the title and the author,
- a list of your goals for the year,
- and a monthly or weekly schedule of your child during the school year.
Who Will You Meet in The Portfolio Meeting

In the meeting, I meet with the Director of Pupil, the Board of Education in my school district. He usually ask some of the questions, such as:
- How are your homeschooled children?
- Where are the sample of worksheets of your children?
- Are you going to continue for next year? or drop?
- How is the social life for your children?
- Do you have any problem in your home-school?
- What is your plan for next year?
The director will not asking any question at all about our homeschool, if I bring some sample of my children school works. He only ask me that if I am going to continue the homeschooling or not.
But this year, I didn't bring any sample of my children school works. The director asked me to bring some sample next time because he wanted to see the actual works. You can read his comment in one of the pictures above.
It's not easy to bring all the materials in 5-6 plastick bags or in a big box in the meeting.
How Long Is The Meeting?

The meeting is only taking 5-10 minutes for each child.
When Is The Portfolio Meeting?

You will get a mail from Board of Education. You have to choose and confirm to the date of meeting with the Board of Education.
Usually the meeting is taking place at the end of school year around June, July, or August.
Things To Remember in Portfolio Meeting.

Things that I always have to remember in portfolio meeting are:
- never bringing children to the meeting.
- to ask the Board of Education, who is in meeting with us, to sign on my cover letter of portfolio meeting in my bundle of record keeping for my children.
- always remembering that the purpose of portfolio meeting is to overview of the homeschool year that the child is have been done in homeschooling and that progress is being made.
- keeping a portfolio is a great keep sake, a good way to chart progress and keep records.
- not to copy any your child works for Board of Education, except the transcript from the institution where your child attended the classes. With this transcript, your child will be dropped for the next portfolio meeting.
- to copy the papers which you are signing on for your record.
- asking any support in your school district, such as textbooks, school facility, and important information regarding the testing or others.
- making a lot of doa to Allah.

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

Alhamdulillah, my kids finished the Spring semester. They were doing great on their final exam.
Alhamdulillah, they did very well on the school. I knew that they were working hard to learn and get the good grade. And the same time, they had fun in between.

Summer is here.

In this summer, we plan to go on vacation with the kids and take summer course for my older kids, insha Allah.
Our small halaqah is still going on in this summer. Alhamdulillah. The kids will continue to read Al-Qur'an with tajweed and to learn more about Islamic study.

Please do not forget Islamic activities for your kids in this summer, such as:
memorization Al-Qur'an and Islamic study (story of Prophets and Sahabah).

Some of ideas for the summer that you can do with your kids at home are as following:

Do You Want Some Money?

It was my son final exam.
He was telling me story about one of his classmate asking my son to do something.

"Do you want 20 dollar?", he asked to my son.
"No", said my son.

"Do you want one hundred dollar?", he asked again.
"Yes, of course", my son answered.

"If you want one hundred dollar, you have to give me all the answers in this exam." he explained to my son.
My son answered quickly, "Oh I can not do that, my dad will get mad to me. And this is not good manner in the school."

I was very happy to hear this story. My son can handle this kind of problem with good manner.
I think his classmate was very desperate about this final exam and expecting my son will help him.

Alhamdulillah, my son's score is A in that course.

Alhamdulillah, Allah bless us with this earth and all the environment just for us.
We have to take care our environment everyday in this earth. Everyday is our earth day for Muslim. If our environment is clean, insha Allah, we can have our clean water, clean air, and healthy families.

Global Warming

There are so many problems about global warming, the climate is changing. Earthquakes, forest in fire, flooding, our decreasing natural resources, and other natural disasters are happening everywhere around the world.
There are several other causes of Global Warming, it is important to learn about what is affecting our world. Global Warming is a very serious threat to our way of life.

The Important of Earth

"He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth."
(Al Qur'an 6. surah Al An'am : ayah 101)

Allah made the earth a place suitable to prayer , Prophet Mohummed (PBUH) says " wherever the time for the prayer comes upon you , perform the prayer ; for all the earth is a place of worshiping for you".

"And the stars and the trees prostate."
(Al Qur'an 55. surah Ar-Rahman: ayah 6).
All the earth is a place for prostration, which means that all the earth is place for turning in humility. By bowing in prostration anywhere and everywhere we join the stars and the trees, the heavens and the earth.

Earth, Planets, And Other Living Things In Al Qur'an

In Al-Qur'an, there are so many statements about earth, planets, water, and all about all other living things.

All living things are made of from water.

Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?
(Al Qur'an surah:21.Al-Anbiya ayah:30)
Planets created to serve man.

He is the Cleaver of the Daybreak, and He has made the night for rest and the sun and the moon for calculation. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing. (96)
And it is He who placed for you the stars that you may be guided by them through the darknesses of the land and sea. We have detailed the signs for a people who know. (97)
(Al Qur'an surah:6.Al-Anam ayah 96-97)
Water Cycle

And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy [i.e., rainfall] until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded.
(Al Qur'an surah:7.Al-Araf ayah:57)
Water

And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them to exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for people who reason.
(Al Qur'an surah:13. Al-Rad ayah:4)

He sends down from the sky, rain, and valleys flow according to their capacity, and the torrent carries a rising foam. And from that [ore] which they heat in the fire, desiring adornments and utensils, is a foam like it. Thus Allah presents [the example of] truth and falsehood. As for the foam, it vanishes, [being] cast off; but as for that which benefits the people, it remains on the earth. Thus Allah present examples.
(Al Qur'an surah:13.Al-Rad ayah:17)
The Mountains

"We placed firmly embedded mountains on the earth, so it would not move under them, and We made therein [mountain] passes [as] roads that they might be guided."
(Al Qur'an surah: 21. al Anbiya :ayah 31).

Earth And Others Living Things In Hadiths

Some hadiths that are saying about the important of taking care of our earth are, such as:

Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) visited Umm Mubashshir al-Ansariya at her orchard of date-palms and said to her: Who has planted these trees of dates-a Muslim or a non-Musim? She said: A Muslim, of course, whereupon he said: Never a Muslim plants, or cultivates a land, and it out of that men eat, or the animals eat, or anything else eats, but that becomes charity on his (planter's) behalf.
(Sahih Muslim Book 010, Number 3765)
Jabir b. Abdullah (Allah be pleased with them) reported: Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) visited the orchard of Umm Ma'sud and said: Umm Ma'bad. he who has planted this tree, is he a Muslim or a non-Muslim? She said: Of course, he is a Muslim, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: No Muslim who plants (trees) and from their fruits the human beings or the beasts or birds eat, but that would be taken as an act of charity on the Day of Resurrection.
(Sahih Muslim Book 010, Number 3767)
Anas reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying
"Never does a Muslim plant trees or cultivate land and birds or a man or a beast eat out of them but that is a charity on his behalf."
(Sahih Muslim Book 010, number 3769)

Those hadiths show that the important of taking care our earth by planting the trees as an act of charity.

Action For Earth

There are so many ways that we can teach to our children to take care our earth clean, such as:

Clean up event around the house or the school or the community.
Teach about environmental issues affecting ours.
Teach about the causes and effect of global warming.
Teach the important of clean water.
Make a poster about "Save the Earth".
Have fun learning about plants, soil, water, and more.
Explore and learn about rivers, lakes, and streams.
Teach about Reduse, reuse, and recycle.

Some of actions to reduce energy and reduce waste are:

In House
- Turn off lights when you leave a room.
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps(CFLs).
- Wash clothes with cold water. Consider using air to dry your clothes.
- Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degree Farenheit and wrap it with an insulation blanket.
In Backyard
- Plant a family garden. It's a fun way to learn what goes into growing produce, and the results are delicious.
- Use a rake instead of leaf blower, it's great exercise and cuts down on pollution and energy consumption.
- Use a push mower and leave grass clippings on your lawn to decompose and return organic nutrients to the soil.
In Your Trash
- Recycle everything.
- Purchase reusable and durable items rather than disposables.
- Compost your leaves, grass, and kitchen scraps to reduce materials that go to a landfill.
In Your Car
- Keep your vehicle maintained, including tire pressure, filter and oil changes.
- Don't carry more items around in your car than you need. Extra weight reduces gas mileage and increases emissions.
- Try to drive non peaks hours to avoid idling in heavy traffic.
  Idling hurts engines, wastes gas and generates unnecessary emissions.
- Consider walking, biking, carpooling or using mass transit when you can.

Insha Allah by doing some of those actions above our child will be a leader who care about the environment. My students said that "We are the Green Generation".

Allah is with Those Who Patiently Persevere (Saabireen)
- O you who believe! seek assistance through patience and prayer; surely Allah is with the patient.
  [2. Surah Al-Baqarah : Ayah 153]
- And obey Allah and His Apostle and do not quarrel for then you will be weak in hearts and your power will depart, and be patient; surely Allah is with the patient.
  [8. Surah Al-Anfaal : Ayah 46]
Allah is with Those Who Believe (Mumineen)
- If you demanded a judgment, the judgment has then indeed come to you; and if you desist, it will be better for you; and if you turn back (to fight), We (too) shall turn back, and your forces shall avail you nothing, though they may be many, and (know) that Allah is with the believers.
  [8. Surah Al-Anfaal : Ayah 19]
Allah is with Those Who Restrain Themselves (Muttaqeen)
- O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).[9. Surah At-Tawba : Ayah 123]
- The Sacred month for the sacred month and all sacred things are (under the law of) retaliation; whoever then acts aggressively against you, inflict injury on him according to the injury he has inflicted on you and be careful (of your duty) to Allah and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).
  [2. Surah Al-Baqarah : Ayah 194]
Allah is with Those Who do Good (Muhsineen)
- Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and have disputations with them in the best manner; surely your Lord best knows those who go astray from His path, and He knows best those who follow the right way. And if you take your turn, then retaliate with the like of that with which you were afflicted; but if you are patient, it will certainly be best for those who are patient. And be patient and your patience is not but by (the assistance of) Allah, and grieve not for them, and do not distress yourself at what they plan. Surely Allah is with those who guard (against evil) and those who do good (to others).
  [16. Surah An-Nahl : Ayah 125-128]

Teaching Kids about Cleanliness in Islam

Last week, my youngest one asked me how to take wudhu. I was so happy helping her to learn how to take a wudu before salah. Alhamdulillah.

The steps of taking wudhu are:

Making Niyyah (Intention) that you are making Wudu' for Salaat and begin by saying. "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah).
Washing both hands up to the wrist three times, the right hand first and then the left, and making sure that water has reached between the fingers.
Rinsing and gargling the mouth three times;
Washing the nose into three times;
Washing the face beginning from the forehead to the bottom of the chin, three times;
Washing your right arm and then your left arm thoroughly, from the forearms up to the elbows three times;
Wiping wet hands over the head from front down to the neck, only one time.
Then passing the wet tips of your index fingers into the grooves and holes of both ears and also pass the wet thumbs behind the ears (three times).
Washing the feet including the ankles three times, making sure that water has reached between the toes and back of the feet. Do the right foot first and then the left.
Doa

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَاً عَبْدَهُ وَرَسُولَهُ

"Ash-hadu an la ilaha illal lahu wah dahu la shariikala wa ash-hadu anna Muammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh."

Cleanliness In Islam

We, as parent, are responsible in teaching our kids about cleanliness.
Cleanliness, more importantly starts from keeping our body clean.
We have to take a bath and to clean and to wash thoroughly our private parts and bodies.

Teaching cleanliness should start with personal hygiene. Children should learn the importance of hygiene and the various diseases when they are very young age. It is essential to teach them certain habits like washing hands with soap and water before meals, regular brushing of teeth, using the toilet, taking a bath, and taking wudhu (an ablution).

In our community, children should follow certain rules such as keeping our surroundings clean and avoid littering in public places.
Children should be taught to keep public places clean just as their houses. They should not be allowed to litter at public places like parks and roadsides. We also should teach them how to use and to clean when they go to the masjid restrooms just the way they do at home.

In Islam the Arabic term for purity is Taharah.
Al Qur'an insists that the believer should maintain a constant state of purity.

Cleanliness in Islam emphasis in both its spiritual and physical. On the physical side, Islam requires the Muslim to clean his body, his clothes, his house, and the whole community. Allah will reward for being clean. On the spiritual side, Muslim should clean their heart and soul.

Cleanliness In Al Qur'an
- "Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean." (2: 22)
- "Keep your clothes clean." (74:4)
- "Believers! When you prepare for prayer wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; rub your heads (with water) and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. If you are ritually impure bathe your whole body." (5:6)
- "Of their wealth take alms so that you may purify and sanctify them." (9: 103)
  
  Charity is a way of purifying ours wealth. A Muslim should give charity (Sadaqah) and pay the required annual Zakah, the 2.5% alms-tax.
Cleanliness In Hadiths
- Narrated AbuMalik al-Ash'ari:
  
  The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Cleanliness is half of faith and Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) fills the scale, and SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah) and Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) fill up what is between the heavens and the earth, and prayer is a light, and charity is proof (of one's faith) and endurance is a brightness and the Qur'an is a proof on your behalf or against you. All men go out early in the morning and sell themselves, thereby setting themselves free or destroying themselves.
  (Sahih Muslim Book 2, Number 0432)
- "Don't ever come with your hair and beard disheveled like a devil." [Al-Tirmidhi]
- "Had I not been afraid of overburdening my community, I would have ordered them to brush their teeth for every prayer." (Bukhari)
How and What To Clean
- Ghusl (a complete bath)
  
  This is when all our parts of the body are washed with water, including the mouth and the nose.
- Wudhu (ablution)
  
  This is when certain our parts of the body are washed with water.
  
  "Once I went up the roof of the mosque along with Abu Huraira (RA): He performed ablution and said, "I heard the Prophet (S) saying, 'On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called Al-Ghurr-ul-Muhajjalun from the traces of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so (by performing ablution in the most perfect manner.'"
  (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol. 1, Hadith No. 138)
  
  This hadiths show us that the important of wudhu (ablution) in Islam.
  
  Narrated Uthman ibn Affan:
  "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'He who performed ablution well, his sins would come out from his body, even coming out from under his nails.'" (Sahih Muslim, Book 2, Number 0476)
- Tayammum (purification without water)
- Removing Hairs and Cutting The Nails
  
  We do not want to look alike an animals because of our hairs and nails growing long.
  
  Prophet (peace be upon him). He said, "From the acts of nature are five: circumcision (obligation for men, but not for women), removing pubic hairs, trimming the mustache, cutting the nails and plucking the hair from under the armpits."
  [Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim].
  
  It is not allowed to leave them for more than forty nights. This is based on the Hadith of Anas who said, "The Messenger of Allah set a time limit for us for trimming the mustache, trimming nails, removing armpit hairs and removing pubic hairs. They cannot be left for more than forty nights." [Recorded by Muslim].

We should always keep reminding our children the importance of hygiene and how to maintain it.
You can give your children rewards, such as sticker or sweets or small gift, for every effort from time to time.

The Rights Of Children Upon The Parents

"Mothers should feed their children for two whole years (that is) for those who wish to complete the suckling term, the cost of their food and clothing on equitable terms is upon the father of the child."
(AL Qur'an surah Al-Baqarah 2:233)

Last Saturday night, we went to masjid for aqeeqah.
Aqeeqah is one of the children's rights upon the parents.

Here are some others of children's right upon parents, as following:

We should do Aqeeqah for our newborn child if we can afford it.

Aqeeqah refers to the animal slaughtered as a sacrifice for a newborn child.

’Aa’ishah, Umm Karz, Asmaa’ Bint Yazeed, and Ibn ’Abbaas (y), all reported that Allaah’s Messenger (S) said: "The Aqeeqah is two sheeps for the male child, and one for the female." [There is no harm whether they be male or female animals.]
We should give our children a good name.

Abdullah ibn Abbas (R.A.) relates that the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said "It is also a claim of the child on his father that he gives him a good name and teaches him good manners."

In another hadeeth, the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said "on the Day of Resurrection, you will be called out by your name and the name of your father. -The call will be:- so and-so, son of so-and-so, therefore, give good names."
We should do circumcised when they are young.
We should teach how to read and memorize Al Qur'an.

The sisters should listen to Al Qur'an when the baby is still in womb after 4 months.
The child will quite beacuse of listening Al Qur'an.

The first thing the baby should hear when born is Allah's name, the Adzan. Father should make adhan with soft voice.
We should teach them about our deen.

We should bring them to masjid and let them hear about Jannah (paradise) and Jahanam (hell),so they will have their heart to our deen.

Most of the kids do not know about haram and halal, they only think about enjoyment.
We should teach them to make doa for their parents.

Allah will not punish us when our children make doa for their parents.

"Rabbighfirli wa li wa lidayya warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira"
[Oh Allah! Bestow upon my parents mercy as they cherished us in childhood.]
We should order them to do salah so they will fear of Allah.
We should make doa for our children, too.
We should control the TV, the game, and any other playstation.
We should ask our children to read together Islamic books at home.
Alhamdulillah, this is what we always try to do with our children. We can make a small halaqah regulary with our children.
We should try to read Al Qur'an and Islamic books for 5 to 15 minutes everyday.
Insha Allah, our children will be a good Muslim in the future with Allah's bless.

These are some of the children's rights upon the parents that Sheikh gave on lecture that Saturday night.
Next week, insha Allah, we are going to masjid for another invitation on aqeeqah.

Last Thursday, we were in shelter at Columbus House. The kids helped the sisters in serving the foods for the people in shelter. Alhamdulillah, the foods was enough for all of them. They were about 90 people in shelter in that time.

This activity is good for kids to learn helping others who are in need.

May Allah help them to survive in this life and guide them in the right path. Ameen.

Teach and Learn Islam

Alhamdulillah, we did having a small class in masjid to teach the students from 8th grade in Ezra Academy. They came visiting the masjid and learned about Islam.
My one of my kids showed to them how to perform salah.

Some of the questions that the students asked were as following:
- What is Islam?
- What is Muslim?
- What is the pillar of Islam?
- What is the pillar of Beliefs?
- What is Jihad?
- Do woman and man pray together or separate?
- About Halal and Haram foods.
- Do Muslim kids at public school pray at noon in the school?
- Do Muslim kids also learn about other religions?
- Story of Hajj.

This event showed that there were so many of them want to learn about Islam.
I think they learned a lot about Islam.

It is so ashammed if we see some of Muslim kids didn't know the basic knowledge about Islam.
We should teach Islam regularly to our Muslim kids.
The most important thing is the kids have to practice the religion in their daily life.

May Allah help us to teach and learn Islam. Ameen.

Winter Vacation

We were having a winter vacation in December 2009.
Alhamdulillah, the kids were really enjoying in there.
We visited some of the campus such as, University of Michigan in Ann Arborn and in Dearborn.
It's nice place.

Teaching Islamic Manners and Adab

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "Every child is born on Fitrah (man’s innate disposition to monotheism), his parents make him Jewish, Christian or a fire worshiper." (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
This hadith shows the important of the parents' role in teaching their children.

Parents should take care of their children and bring them up according to the Islamic manners and adab. Parents should be a good example in their behavior because children like to imitate their parents in sayings and deeds.
Parents should share responsibility raising up and educating their children.

In Al-Qur'an (surah at-Tahreem 66:6) stated that: "O' you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a fire whose fuel is people and stones."

We do not want to be fuel in the Hell fire.

Islamic Manners and Adab In Hadiths

Some of the hadiths are:

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "The believers who have the most perfect faith are those who have the best manners." [Abu Daawood]
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "The example of the believers in their reciprocal love and mercy is like a human body, when one of its organs suffers, the rest of the body remains awake and suffers fever." [Muslim]

Islamic Manners and Adab In Al Qur'an

Some of the statements in Al-Qur'an are:

"And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them reach old age in your life, never say 'uff’ (an expression of displeasure), nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour. And humble yourself to them out of mercy and say, 'My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small.'" (Al-Qur'an surah al-Isra' 17:23 and 24)
''Worship Allah and associate none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, the needy, the neighbor who is near of kin, the neighbor who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful. " (Al-Qur'an surah an-Nisa' 4:36)
"Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating (in prayer), seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure.… " (Al-Qur'an surah al-Fath 48:29]

What and How To Teach Islamic Manners and Adab

Teaching About Islam, Iman, and Ihsan.

Parents should teach the religion to their children, such as
- teaching Al-Qur'an.
- teaching Hadiths.
- what is Islam, Iman, and Ihsan,
- teaching praying or salah five times a day,
- fasting in the month of Ramadan,
- giving charity and Zakah,
- doing Hajj,
- and other Islamic Studies.
The Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa salam said that: "Order your children to pray at the age of seven. And beat them (lightly), if they do not do so by the age of ten. And separate them in their bedding." (Abu Dawud)
Beating them lightly does not mean to hurt them. Parents should always remind their children about how the important of praying or salah in their life.
I always tell my children that praying or salah five time a day is teaching us about time management in our life. Allah wants us to have good time management in our daily life.
When the peak time during the day people are busy or when the night time people are sleeping in very quiet time, Allah wants us to come closer and talk to Allah in our praying. Praying or salah is also very good for our body and soul.

There is also another hadith about the important of praying or salah.
"The first act that the servant of Allah will be accountable for on the Day of Judgment will be salah. If it is good, then the rest of his acts will be good. And if it is evil, then the rest of his acts will be evil." (Tabarani)
Teaching Nicely and Patiently.

Parents should teach nicely and patiently.
The Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa salam taught us to be nicely and patiently to the children.
When he was praying as an Imam with the people, his grandson Al-Hasan, son of his daughter Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with them, rode his back while he was bowing. The Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa salam lengthened his bow. When he finished his prayer, some attending Companions said, "You lengthened your bow?" Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, answered, "My grandson rode my back and I hate hastening him."

It was also mentioned in the two books of Al-Bukhari and Muslim that `A’ishah radiallahu anha said that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his house) kissed Al-Hassan and Al-Hussein (his grandsons) while Al-Aqra’ ibn Hobis Al Tamimi was present. So Al Aqra’ said, "I have ten children. I have never kissed any of them!"
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his house) looked at him and said, "He who does not have mercy will not have mercy upon him."

These hadiths tell us that parents should be nice, kind, patient, and have mercy upon the children.

Teaching To Find Good Friends.

We, as parent, should always remind the children to find good friends, because friends will influence to their behavior.
The Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa salam said that: "Man is inclined to get influenced by his friend's manners, so one must be careful in choosing friends." (Reported by Abu Dawud & At-Tirmidhi)
Teaching About The Brotherhoods and Sisterhoods In Islam.

Parents should bring the children to the masjids, Islamic events, and Muslim communities. Telling and reading Islamic stories can help teaching the children how to choose their examples and models. The children should also learn about Islamic greeting (in pdf) or salam.
Teaching About Halal (permissible) and Haram (forbidden) in Islam.

The children should be taught about the manner of eating and halal and tayyib foods.
Teaching About Jannah and Naar.

Parents should also teach the children about Jannah (Paradise) and Naar (Hell). Teaching Islamic manners and adab can implants the love and the fear of Allah into the children's heart.

In Al Qur'an ( surah At-Taubah: ayah 105) stated that: "And Say Do deeds! Allah will see your deeds, and (so will) his Messenger and the believers. And you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen. Then He will inform you of what you used to do."
Teaching The Children To Be Patient And Taqwa.

Parents should teach the children that life in this world is just a test for Muslim. When the children are happy, they will be thankful only to Allah. When the children are sad, they should always be patient and taqwa.
When the children grow up, they will be more prepared to be patient during painful and be more thankful in happiness because his parents taught him about Iman (faith).
Teaching Not to Backbiting and Slandering

Parents should teach the children not to backbiting and slandering. We should always say the truth to them. What parents said in the house will be imitated by the children.

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "Do you know what back biting is?” They (companions) said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "It is to attribute to your brother what he dislikes." He sallallahu alaihi wa salam asked: "What do you think if what I say about my brother is true?" He sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "If what you attribute to him is true, then you have backbitten him, and if it is not true, then you have lied about him." [Muslim]

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "Talebearer will not be admitted to Paradise." [Muslim]

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "There are four traits whoever possesses them is a sheer hypocrite, and he who possesses one of them, possesses a trait of hypocrisy unless he quits it. They are: when he speaks, he lies; and when he enters into an agreement, he acts unfaithfully; when he promises, he breaches his promise; and when he litigates, he behaves treacherously. While the liar receives the anger of Allah on the Day of Resurrection." [Al-Bukhaari]

The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa salam said that: "He who guarantees, what is in between his jaws (tongue), and what is in between his thighs (private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him." [Al-Bukhaari]
Teaching about Cleanliness.

"Cleanliness is part of Iman" (Bukhari) and "Allah is pure and He loves purity" (Muslim). These hadiths show the importance of cleanliness. Cleanliness is also part of prayer. Parents should teach the children how to take wudu and manners in bathroom.

Conclusion

The easy way in teaching Islamic manners and adab to the children is to practice Islam and show good examples in the children daily life.
Parents should be a good example in their behavior because children like to imitate their parents in their sayings and their deeds.

The best way to teach Islamic manners and adab is to have the children's hearts the love for Allah and the Prophet sallalhu alaihi wa salam. It means that parents should teach the children about Al-Qur'an and Hadiths and practice in their daily life.

The children should learn Islamic manners and adab toward the parents, the relatives, and the community by being:

friendly,
respectfully,
polite,
honesty,
no backbiting and slandering,
no lying,
patiently,
taqwa,
clean.

May Allah always help us in teaching our kids to be good Muslim. Ameen.
